Herbert Quain's Top Five Psytrance(ish) Albums of 2019

It's been another great year of psytrance. It was very difficult to pick five favorite albums, and they change from day to day.  Here are five of my top releases from this year, in no particular order.  Hope you have a great 2020! Let's keep pushing the music forward!

The Dog of Tears - dogspiral 2 (Xexify Records)

This triple disc from The Dog of Tears is is his best material yet, and includes a wide range of unique tracks.  It is composed entirely of live studio jams without overdubs.  Disc one is a stunning evolution in the project's sound, consisting of groovy melodic tracks.  However, because of his highly individual sound design, nothing else sounds like it.  At times, it somehow resembles a combination of early Rinkadink and Autechre.  What is most remarkable about it, to my ears, is that it retains a feeling of melodic darkpsy, but unlike most such attempts, it is not simply darkpsy with some added melodic elements.  Instead, virtually every element is melodic, but without every sounding cheesy or clubby.  The second disc ventures into darker territory, but retains a steadier groove that his earlier work.  Finally, the third disc showcases the project's most experimental side, with everything from tracks resembling David Lynch's crackling electricity with a hint of psytrance to psytrance tracks with near-endlessly repeating melodic lines.  Looking forward to seeing where this project goes next!

Mother of Datura - Inside the womb ov Darkness (Horrodelic Records)

This young producer from Sweden delivers another album of unrelenting dark psycore.  It stands out due to its incredible atmospheres.  Mother of Datura creates fully-realized worlds with each track, instead of relying on scratchy leads or melodies like many other artists.  At the same time, the kick and bass is extremely well executed and danceable.  Can't wait to hear more in 2020, along with his collaboration project with Gurgamesh, Parasitorum.

Pluriverso - Now and Then (Kamakhya Records); Mystic Behaviors (Samana Records)

This prolific duo released two amazing eps this year, Now and Then on Kamakhya and Mystic Behaviors on Samana.  Now and Then is a concept EP based around Donovan Philips Leitch, a pioneer 60s psychedelic musician who influenced the Beatles.  Pluriverso's sampling of his music creates a unique set of tracks that incorporate elements found in darkpsy and psycore, but that make sense on sunny afternoon dance floors.  The Mystic Behaviors EP is slightly more traditional, as far as Pluriverso goes, but won't be mistaken for any other psytrance project.  As usual, the tracks resemble traditional darkpsy in terms of kick/bass and bpm, but defy easy categorization due to the different elements and structures of the tracks.  At times, it sounds like the most creative, freeform psycore repackaged as groovy darkpsy.  Proceeds from both of these releases go to charitable causes, so show some love!

Audiosyntx - Simplex and Redux (Quintessence Records)

Audiosyntx has often made conceptual projects, and this pair of releases on Quintessence Records is no exception.  Simplex consists of seven tracks ranging from 132 to 172 bpm.  Each displays a heavy techno influence.  But, unlike many unsuccessful attempts to combine techno and psytrance, Audiosyntx does not stick overt techno sounds into a psytrance framework.  Instead, he works with a deeper understanding of both genres, evoking techno through relatively sparse sound design and low basslines.   Redux takes the same tracks, strips out some of the psytrance elements, and lowers the bpm to further highlight their techno aspects.

Anthropus - Andhakara Puja (Andhakara Records)

When Brazil-based Anthropus toured South India for India-based Andhakara Records, he recorded a variety of soundscapes from forests to traffic jams.  He then incorporated them into this full length album.  The heavy use of these field recordings gives the release distinct sound design, along with Anthropus's clean and creative basslines and track structure.  Hearing this album powerfully brings back wonderful memories of my times in the area.

Top 5 Tracks of 2018

Another incredible year of psytrance. It was very difficult to narrow down my top 5 tracks, but here's what I came up with. Tons of other incredible work out there. I left off all Absolut Shit releases to avoid bias, but a big thank-you to all the artists who worked with us for their great tracks! Below are my top 5, please support these artists and labels!

Nutby’s four-track ep on the amazing Kamakhya records is one of the most underrated releases of the year. This anonymous mystery producer creates unpredictable sound collages. I’m especially happy to hear such weirdness at traditional bpms-here, 149. Nutby has a unique sound, but reminds me of what Psykovsky could have been had he gone in a different direction. I hope to hear more from this mystery artist.

Plankton is best known for her amazing high tempo work, but this 160 bpm track is a masterpiece. Building on ideas from her prior track Abstract Poetry, this track includes subtle melodic elements and precise sound design slightly reminiscent of the clicks and cuts genre, and especially Murcof’s early work dissecting string instrument samples. The combination of these elements and its dancefloor-friendly kickbass makes this one special.

Darkpsy enthusiasts are familiar with Yoshua’s style: a distinct kick drum and detailed sound design that brings back memories of horrorplace. This is my favorite track from Yoshua yet. Because the track does not use leads, its raw power reminds me of the best darkpsy dancefloors I’ve been on. The quarter-note section is on another level. I can’t wait to hear it at parties in 2019.

Sectio Aurea remixing the Nommos-four psychedelic minds. The original was made in Goa for Eight Finger Eddie’s 80th birthday. It’s fitting that Sectio Aurea did the remix, as they are one of the only artists capable of infusing their tracks with the emotion necessary to honor the late Eddie. But they take the original’s straightforward groove and turn it into a powerful experimental track. For me, this is as good as it gets. Take the train to nirvana station.

Groovality’s soundcloud is full of truly experimental psytrance. His tracks demonstrate what can happen when producers showcase their passion for sound and music instead of genre norms. On my favorite track from his new EP, he has an incredible cinematic ambient intro, followed by super high bpm psytrance that has a slow half or even quarter time feel. Another artist I can’t wait to hear more of.

Looking forward to a great 2019!

Demente Gallery

Only A Dream, A Dream of A Madness and of Darkness

Absolut Shit Record's first event was a benefit for the SIMS Foundation, and nonprofit organization, an Austin group that provides access and financial support for mental health and addiction recovery to Austin music professionals and their family members.

The event was hosted at the ScratchHouse in downtown Austin May 12th, 2017, and featured Yoshua EM (Mexico) with Discordia CREW and Anomalistic Records. Yoshua E.M. Absolut Shit has released two tracks of Yoshua's; Yoshua EM - Miranda (CinderVOMIT rmx) from EP5, and Yoshua E.M. - No Expectations from EP6.

Demente also featured creator and founder of Absolut Shit Records, Herbert Quain! Herbert Quain has been in the psytrance scene as long as I can remember; I met him throwing an event in his living room, over 13 years ago! Impeccable taste in music, which made for quite the slamming set at Demente.

We also had musical support from Nivlem with FYB and Samana Records! Nivlem's set sounded great and was the perfect start to the night.

Visual artwork was provided by the talented Tony and Caleb from Prismatic Productions, and we had the most amazing sculpture art on stage by Haven Meadows. With both creative productions in collaboration with the music, the ScratchHouse became a unique beast that night unlike their regular nights!

For more music samples and images from Demente, head to our gallery and events page. We look to host more events in the future, so keep posted here on our website for updates!

We have plenty of exciting things in the works including more music and artwork. Stay tuned here for updates on all the surprises in store for 2018!

The 2017 Absolut Shit Wrap Up

As 2017 draws to end, I find myself thinking about what an AWESOME year it's been for psytrance. Between the music being released, parties that are happening, and creative ideas that are circulating, there's an excitement that I haven't felt since around 2003-2005. This year has been a powerful reminder of why I fell in love with psytrance in the first place. 2017 was full of uncategorizable tracks that were danceable yet strange, dark yet melodic, and raw but powerful. Tracks ignored subgenre restrictions and many artists produced at a wide range of bpms. I could go on and on about my favorite tracks and releases, but instead I'll highlight five tracks that grabbed my attention in 2017:

 Anficlavis - LunaScorpio

This track is contained on the incredible album "Remembering," which features tracks by three projects from the same Switzlerland-based duo: Argot Digamma, Anficlavis, and Sectio Aurea. The release is a reminder that artist albums at their best cover a wide range of tempos and sounds, taking the listener on a journey that develops and changes over the course of the album. This track stands out because it's at a classic proggy tempo and features classic (non-psy) trance sounds that come in starting at 4:18. Between that and the groovy baseline, in the hands of a lesser artist these elements would result in cheese. Instead it's combined with a phenomenal sense of pacing and sound design, making for an intensely psychedelic listening experience.

Walpurgisnacht Projekt - No Dream Sequence

Mexico-based duo Walpurgisnacht Projekt's track No Dream Sequence was released on on the terrific compilation Paradelika Records compilation The Last Trip 30. Superficially it contains many structural elements of traditional darkpsy, but with Walpurgisnacht Projekt's trademark killer sound design and baselines. But what makes this track special is the beautiful melody that bookends the track. It's the perfect melody-not dark, not euphoric, just right. Incredible at home and on the dance floor.

Tzu-Jan - The Day We Met in Shaman's Garden

Another duo (I'm sensing a pattern here) Austria-based Tzu-Jan self-released an EP this year that was definitely a highlight of 2017 for me. This track is actually not my favorite from that release. That would be their Baudelaire-referencing, Asa Chang & Junray sampling masterpiece Le Fleurs du Mal, my favorite track of 2017. That one is only available on the EP. Fortunately, the title track is available online and it's fantastic as well. For many years, a criticism of psytrance I've heard from followers of other genres is that psytrance lacks low end. The Tzu-Jan project does not have that issue. Clean production with awesome sound design and deep bass makes their music stand out in the best way possible.

Hutti and Uttu - The Crack of Thunder

Traditional forest psy is a subgenre I've largely drifted away from over the last few years. Hearing this track that sits comfortably within the forest psy tradition makes me want to delve back into that style. Pretty much forest psy at its best, with a wicked and distinct melody thrown in to give this track a little something special. It was released on Yggdrasil Record's triple-CD release of foresty downtempo and trance Good Vibrations.

Ankur - Nonno vs G2

Ankur's album Koinophobia blew me away. It's fairly traditional psytrance in its core elements, but still creates a unique sound by drawing on a variety of influences. One of the great things about the album is that each track is distinct. Nonno vs. G2 reminds me of a period of psytrance before full-on, darkpsy, and prog became the three primary categories people spoke of, and artists were making what was simply called "psytrance." Plus there's some techno aspects to my ears, which is always a plus. What's especially exciting and forward-thinking is that Ankur will be releasing most or all of the tracks as stems for people to remix, and will be releasing the three tracks made in Ableton as project files, creating an amazing educational opportunity and potential for remixes. It's hugely inspiring to see artists helping push the genre forward, and I hope we all work together in this spirit in 2018!
